Twitter Nigeria erupted on Monday as users of the popular social media site dug into renowned Nigerian-American writer, Nnedi Okorofor, for her tweet in reply to another user.

Twitter user @OniZay tweeted that she was “going to be one of the best writers to come out of Nigeria” and the US based professor replied that “talk is cheap”.

The writer in her defense claimed that her reply was meant as a form of encouragement and nothing more, as it was a tool she implemented often with her students. When pressed about if she meant it as an encouragement, she responded on Twitter

yup. i did.

it’s something i tell students all the time. it means “go write”.

but twitter is twitter

Her response and defense were however not well received by majority of Twitter Nigeria as most felt it was condescending and a tad rude.

Nnedi is a writer of fantasy and science fiction for both children and adults and is the author of widely acclaimed books ‘Who Fears Death’ and ‘Binti’. In July 2017, she announced via Twitter that Who Fears Death was picked up by HBO to become a TV series with novelist and Game of Thrones, George R.R Martin, joining the project as an executive producer.

She is also currently contracted with Marvel and has written story lines for the Black Panther comic book series among others
