Akinwunmi Ambode’s biography
Akinwunmi Ambode’s date of birth is 14th of June, 1963. The place of his birth is Epe city, Lagos State. He is the sixth child in his family.
The late father of Mr. Ambode, Festus Akinwale Ambode served as a teacher. His mother, Christianah Oluleye Ambode was a business woman.
Education
In 1969, Akin Ambode started his primary schooling at Ebutte Meta, Lagos. He attended Federal Government College Warri for secondary school education.
Ambode lived in Warri for seven years. Ambode finished his secondary education and got the second best result in WAEC in the final. Mr. Ambode studied accounting at the University of Lagos and became graduate in 1984 at twenty-one years old.
Akinwunmi Ambode further improved his education in the best educational institutions of Europe and the USA. He studied programs and courses in such prestigious universities and schools as:
- Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania
- Cranfield School of Management
- Institute of Management Development (Lausanne, Switzerland)
- John F. Kennedy School of Government in Harvard
Moreover, he served a year with NYSC in Nigerian central bank.
Career
Akin Ambode got a job of an accountant at the Lagos State Waste Disposal Board. Mr. Ambode entered the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria examinations. At that time he received a Federal Government Scholarship for obtaining a masters degree in accounting at the University of Lagos. Akin got an Accountant Diploma with Financial Management specialization.
Akinwunmi Ambode In 1988, he took a post of a treasurer’s assistant in the local government of Badagry. In 1991, Mr. Ambode moved to the local government of Shomolu and got a position of an auditor. Then Akin was transferred to the local government of Alimosho as a treasurer of Council. Besides that, Mr. Ambode worked at the post of Council’s treasurer in Shomolu and Mushin.
He was in public service of various Local Government Councils for the ten years. In 2001 Ambode became acting general auditor of local government in Lagos state. In 2005, Ambode became Ministry of Finance’s permanent secretary. Later he took additional duties of the general accountant of Lagos State.
Ambode spent twenty-seven years in the public service and resigned in 2012. Akinwunmi Ambode established Brandsmiths Consulting Limited for public finance and management consulting. His company in collaboration with Price Waterhouse Coopers taught and prepared government accountants and financial staff for transition to the International Public Sector Accounting System in 2015.
He created La Roche Leadership Foundation in 2012, a profitable organization for developing educational and leadership skills in Nigerian youth.
In 2015, Akinwunmi Ambode participated in the elections for governor of the Lagos State. He was nominated by the All Progressives Congress. Ambode won the elections and defeated the nearest rival with a gap of more than 150,000 votes and became the governor of Lagos in 2015.
Personal life
Ambode’s wife is Bolanle Patience Ambode. They got married in 1991. The couple has two children. They are twins: a boy and a girl.
