Rapper 21 Savage Released From ICE Detention On Bond

US-based rapper, 21 Savage, has been released from detention, 10 days after he was arrested for overstaying his visa and living in the country illegally.

Born Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement who detained 21 since the Superbowl night revealed that the musician was a British citizen who has been living in America for almost 20 years.

The rapper through his legal team also admitted that 21 came into the US when he was seven years old and his initial visa expired in 2006 reportedly “through no fault of his own.” They also said he applied for a new one in 2017 as soon as he realized he needed one.

The legal team consisting of Alex Spiro who was hired by Jay Z, Charles H. Kuck and Dina LaPolt tell TMZ “21 Savage asked us to send a special message to his fans and supporters — he says that while he wasn’t present at the Grammy Awards, he was there in spirit and is grateful for the support from around the world and is more than ever, ready to be with his loved ones and continue making music that brings people together.”

The statement from 21’s legal team ends with, “He will not forget this ordeal or any of the other fathers, sons, family members, and faceless people, he was locked up with or that remain unjustly incarcerated across the country. And he asks for your hearts and minds to be with them.”

21 was released on bond pending a deportation hearing and his attorneys say he was granted an expedited hearing.

It’s unclear why ICE held him for so long because, because as with normal procedure, he should have been allowed to bond out the day he was arrested. He was neither a flight risk nor a danger to his community, which is the standard for holding someone in jail pending a deportation hearing.
