The incredible shot, taken by Danny Lawson for the Press Association, beat a snap of the Duchess of Cambridge gazing lovingly at Prince Louis outside the Lindo Wing, and a photograph of Prince Philip lifting his hat following his last official engagement, to the top spot.

NMA’s Royal Rota photography competition attracted entries from a range of royal events over the past 12 months, including Harry and Meghan’s engagement announcement, and the Star Wars premiere.

Members of the public voted for their favourite images from the selection to create a shortlist which was put before a panel of judges.

This year, the NMA also included a special category for photographs of Harry and Meghan together to celebrate their whirlwind year.

Photographer Yui Mok won this competition with a shot of the royal couple from above as they held hands during their carriage procession through Windsor on May 19.

The snap delighted fans in May, due to the heart shape formed by the way the couple sat.
