The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has set up an Emergency Response Centre (ERC) in Imo State to enable the agency and other disaster stakeholders respond quickly to any emergency situation.

This was even as the agency has tasked Imo State government to equip and fund its State Emergency Management Agency with modern facilities to enable them function well.

Head of Imo/Abia operations office of the agency, Evans Ugoh, disclosed this during and emergency stakeholders meeting in Owerri where he called for strengthened collaboration among stakeholders.

Ugoh said that the centre would be a rallying point for all disaster stakeholders in the state and serve as takeoff point for them.

According to him, every disaster agency would donate both manpower and equipment to the center to enable the center operates in a high standard. “We are here today to deliberate on the way forward especially this period of Yuletide.

“It became obvious that we must set up the centre because we needed a rallying point where all stakeholders can takeoff when called upon during emergency”, he said.

He urged the disaster stakeholders to wake up to the challenges ahead to ensure quick response to any kind of emergency in Imo.

Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps in Imo, Mr Joseph Aremu, said the commission has deployed its field marshals to strategic places in Imo to ensure free flow of movement.

He said the ERC would facilitate their job in the state to ensure that any kind of emergency will be properly handled.

Aremu warned against night journey, saying it was better to travel in the day than night.

Daily Independent reports that representative of the police, Red Cross, NSCDC and Federal Medical Centre Owerri, attended the programme.

Also in attendance were Imo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
