Kompany Thrilled As Father Becomes Belgium’s First Black Mayor

Manchester City captain, Vincent Kompany’s dad, Pierre Kompany has been elected the first black mayor in Belgian history, and the Citizens’ ace defender cannot hide his delight.

Pierre Kompany, 71, will stand in Ganshoren, one of the 19 municipalities in the Brussels-Capital region of Belgium, for the ProGanshoren party.

He received 1,327 votes and has one of nine seats for his party in the municipal council.

Pierre Kompany will become the new mayor as part of an agreement which sees ProGanshoren seal an initial coalition agreement with two other parties to reach a majority in the council.

But he will pass the title on halfway through his term to party colleague Jean-Paul Van Laethem.

He said: “I’m happy that together with these two strong partners [coalition partners Liste du Bourgmestre and Defi] I will be in a position to restore order to the political climate which the inhabitants of the municipality of Ganshoren have known.”

In a video, Manchester City captain Kompany and his brother Francois are seen congratulating their dad on his electoral victory.

The defender said: “Just for the guys abroad, he is the first black mayor in Belgium. It’s never happened before, it’s historical, congratulations to my dad.”

Kompany also wrote: “History! We are so proud of you dad. Came over from the DR Congo, as a refugee, in 1975. Now gained the trust of your local community becoming the first ever black elected mayor in Belgium!

“It was long overdue but it’s progress. Massive congrats! ”
