European football governing body UEFA is planning on introducing a third club competition across the continent after the Champions League and Europa league.
The move according to the report by BBC has been in the works for some time and a third tier club competition is set to be rolled out from the 2021/22 season.

According to Andrea Agnelli who is the Head of the European Club Association, they had already been handed the go-ahead and the proposal was only pending approval of the UEFA executive committee.
If effected, the overall number of clubs in European competitions will sit at 96 from the previous 64.
The move will be largely seen as one which aims at maximizing on the huge commercial potential of European competitions while also offering a chance at continental success for big clubs which may have had a disappointing season.
Agnelli, while speaking at the annual general assembly of the ECA in Croatia on Tuesday, September 11, said further consultations were ongoing to determine the exact format the European competition would take.
“A detailed assessment of the existing international match calendar is required prior to presenting a new model post-2024.” he said as quoted by BBC.
In 2012, Chelsea won the championship for the first time, but finished sixth in the league, resulting in fourth-placed Tottenham missing out on Champions League entry for the following season.
