The Borno chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), has commended the Nigerian Army (NA) over the successes recorded in the fight against insurgents in the North-East.
Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, the Director Army Public Relations, disclose this in a statement on Thursday in Maiduguri.
Chukwu quoted NAWOJ’s Chairperson, Hajiya Hadiza Bukar, as giving the commendation, when members of the association visited the Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7 Division, Brig.-Gen. Abdulmalik Biu.
Chukwu quoted Hadiza as saying that the association appreciated the selfless contributions of the military in the restoration of peace, and protection of lives and property in the region.
Hadiza noted that women were the major beneficiaries of the feat achieved by the military in the fight against the insurgents and peace restoration process.
She also noted that the army rescued many women and children and assisted them to regain freedom from the insurgent’s captivity as well as reunite them with their families.
“I will not have known where I should have been if not for the military. By luck; if am alive, I will have been in another country.
“The same thing applied to other women who lived under live threatening conditions in the wake of the insurgency. The gallant troops rescued them, gave them freedom and hope of a better life,” Hazida said.
She, however, pledged support to the military to fast track rehabilitation and empowerment of women and youths.
In his remarks, Biu thanked the chairperson over the visit and assured her of the army’s support to the association.
He noted that the army had been working closely with the media in enhancing information sharing so as to change the narratives of the insurgency activities in the region.
He therefore, urged the members of the association to be accurate and objective in their reportage, as well as contributing meaningfully to the successful implantation of the counter-insurgency campaign.
