Former coach of Real Madrid and Juventus, among other teams, Fabio Capello said on Monday that if he were still at Los Blancos, he would immediately sign Inter’s Argentine star, Mauro Icardi, to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.
Icardi, who was groomed as a footballer at Barcelona’s La Masia youth academy, has played for Inter since 2013 and was twice top scorer of Serie A, in 2014/15 (22 goals) and in 2017/18 ( 29 goals).
“I am a fan of his,” Capello said to Italian national broadcaster, Radio Rai.
“He is a specialist in the penalty area, as was Cristiano Ronaldo, and if you put three balls in the area he hits all three.
“If I were Real Madrid, I would sign him immediately.”
Capello analysed Icardi’s performance with a week to go before the striker plays the derby against Milan and faces a particular duel against his compatriot Gonzalo Higuain.
The Italian coach, who worked with ‘Pipita’ in 2007 at Real Madrid, said that the Argentine is a player with great ‘human qualities,’ in addition to having great technical capabilities.
“He had the great quality of always finding the goal,” Capello continued.
“That means he had coordination, mentality and technical abilities.
“Now he’s improved even more because he participates in the action, and playing in Europe has helped him.
“He’s a very interesting person on a human level and he’s always been a good guy,” he said.
Capello also refers to the fight for the title in Serie A.
“I don’t see how Juventus can lose the ‘Scudetto’ because they’ve showed strength, conviction, almost arrogance over rivals, and I see them as an ultra favourite,” he concluded.
