William Troost Ekong will work under a new coach at his Italian Serie A club, Udinese following the appointment of Davide Nicola
Former coach Julio Velazquez was dismissed on Tuesday, along with assistant coaches Julian Serrano Jimenez, Miguel Vicente Baltanas and Marc Cots Huguet, after a 2-1 defeat to Empoli on Sunday left them fourth from bottom of Serie A.
The defeat was their seventh in a row in the Italian Serie A. The Super Eagles defender, Ekong made 12 Serie A starts under Velazquez before he was sacked.
Former Crotone boss Nicola reportedly agreed to a deal that will run until the end of the 2019-20 season. He is expected to be unveiled to the media at Dacia Arena on Wednesday.
Nicola’s first match in charge will be the home league game against Roma on November 24.
“Davide #Nicola has been appointed as the new head coach of the #Udinese first team. He will be unveiled to the media at Dacia Arena on Wednesday,” a tweet from the official handle of Udinese revealed.
Ekong meanwhile is on international duty with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
He is expected to partner Leon Balogun in the team’s central defence when they face the Bafana Bafana of South Africa at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.
